Many of us believe that abundance has to do with financial prosperity, and that it is reserved for a few lucky people who are in the right place at the right time. Although the idea of abundance involving financial comfort is partially true, the experience of abundance as a life style is both broad and deep, and it depends on our ability to create clarity around our core values and our willingness to set our priorities accordingly.
In her book Creating True Prosperity, Shakti Gawain defines prosperity as the experience of having plenty of what we truly need in life, material and otherwise. Catherine Ponder, author of Open Your Mind to Prosperity, adds another dimension, suggesting that prosperity can measured by the degree that you are experiencing peace, health, and happiness in your world. It's clear, then, that the concept of abundance will mean different things to different people. Your challenge is to understand what prosperous abundance means to you so you can attract it into your life.
Defining Abundance
Abundance is not something we acquire. It is something we tune into. - Wayne Dyer
The first step to attracting abundance is to simply define what it means to you. Take some time to free-write journal your thoughts about what an abundant life means to you, without censoring. Allow your inner voice to come through and speak the truth. Be mindful to listen for messages about what you value most in your experiences, relationships, possessions. When you've finished free-writing, go back and write a clear description of your ideal abundant life. If you wish, create a visual representation of it as well. The more you engage your senses to verbalize and visualize prosperity, the stronger your attractive energy will become.
From Scarcity to Prosperity
The world is full of abundance and opportunity, but far too many people come to the fountain of life with a sieve instead of a tank car… a teaspoon instead of a steam shovel. They expect little and as a result they get little. - Ben Sweetland
Many of us become stalled by scarcity thinking - attitudes and beliefs that there isn't enough for us, we can't break free of where we are now, or we don't deserve better. In order to experience abundance, it's essential to identify patterns of limiting beliefs and scarcity programming and then create new beliefs that will open you to receiving abundance. Michael J. Losier, author of Law of Attraction, provides a simple formula for removing limiting beliefs by creating Allowing Statements. For each limiting belief you hold, use the following process to turn it into a written Allowing Statement:
- Ask yourself if there is currently anyone doing what you want to do or having what you want.
- If so, how many people have been doing this today, yesterday, last week, last month, last year?
- Write your responses in the third person as a general statement, making certain that your statement is plausible.
- Notice as you read and speak your statement that what you want is entirely possible.
- Use your Allowing Statement as a replacement for the original limiting belief to remove the doubt that is preventing you from receiving what you want.
Acknowledge the Abundance You Already Have
When you are grateful fear disappears and abundance appears. - Anthony Robbins
Each day we have is a gift in itself, and each day brings us innumerable gifts - small and large. In an earlier post, I wrote about the power of gratitude to shift your thinking to create positive attitudes and experiences. When you purposefully and intentionally show appreciation for the gifts you receive each day, whether they are tangible or intangible, you surround yourself with prosperous energy. Your awareness that the plentiful Universe has provided you with so much good creates a strong attraction for more good. You can create even more positive energy by using the ritual of a daily gratitude or appreciation journal.
- Each day, write down everything you've appreciated about your day, using the language of gratitude, emotion and enthusiasm You can write about people, events, feelings, the weather - anything goes!
- When you're finished, take a few moments to give thanks for the gifts you've received and for the gifts you will continue to receive.
Wrapping it Up
Whatever we are waiting for - peace of mind, contentment, grace, the inner awareness of simple abundance - it will surely come to us, but only when we are ready to receive it with an open and grateful heart. - Sarah Ban Breathnach
Abundance is available to each one of us to the degree we are willing to open ourselves to receive it. By clearly defining what abundance means to you, reprogramming the limiting beliefs that hold you prisoner to scarcity thinking, and showing gratitude for the prosperity each days brings, you create attractive positive energy. The more you practice being prosperous, the more abundance you will receive.
